Maria Sharapova is the first Russian woman to have won the Wimbledon title in 2004. There has been no male victory so far for Russia until now and that makes Sharapova the first Russian to ever win the championship. She beat Serena Williams and won the crown. |
Serena Williams until then had set an unbeatable record and proved herself to be almost invincible. However, Serena's citadel was knocked down by a beauty from Russia. During the Ladies final, the fans expected Williams to win her third straight Wimbledon title. However, it was Sharapova's day and she took the match with a score of 6-1 and 6-4. She was only 17 years old at that time. In her very first grand slam final, Sharapova finished the first set in 30 minutes.
When the match was over, Sharapova was shown sinking to her knees almost in tears because she realized she was the first Russian to ever win the Championship. She then climbed to the player’s box to hug her father. In fact, she has claimed that she owes her tennis success to her father, who has always supported her in her endeavors.
In a BBC interview, she said she felt that the Wimbledon win was unreal until she collected the trophy.
This win by Sharapova devastated Serena Williams who was the top seed and expected to win with ease. However, credit should be given to Sharapova's amazing play and Serena did heap a lot of praises on her opponent.
Some matches just create legends and first time winners. It is those matches that always occupy a special place in history. In fact, one can easily say the Maria Sharapova's win at Wimbledon in 2004 was a match, especially because her win came from the blue.
