Wimbledon Championship has its own place in the world of sports and tennis. The year 2009 has been pretty eventful for Wimbledon fans with many unexpected victories and games. Certain players who were more expected to make it to the finals did not. Of course, the new roof at the center court was much talked about too. |
Roger Federer was making more news for his personal life than his game. The attention was all focused on his pregnant wife, Mirka. The British fans had a lot of cheer with Andy Murray leading their hopes and until the semi-finals, they were not disappointed. And the absence of Rafael Nadal was felt by many Spanish fans. Nadal opted out of Wimbledon because of knee injury.
In the mixed doubles, Mark Knowles and Anna-Lena Groenefeld were both first time Wimbledon Champions.
Roger Federer won the Wimbledon men's title against Andy Roddick after a marathon fifth set. It was indeed a thrilling match and many tennis fans felt that Roddick should have won. However, it was Federer who took the laurels and ended up with his sixth Wimbledon title. In addition, Federer created history by winning the maximum number of Grand Slams with 15; overtaking Pete Sampras' record of 14.
The ladies final was well contested between the Williams' sisters. Unfortunately defending champion Venus Williams had no answer for the blistering ground strokes of Serena Williams and she lost the finals in straight sets.
However, the shocker in the ladies match was in the semi finals when Venus Williams annihilated Dinara Safina, the world number one, in straight sets. In fact, Safina looked like a novice who did not have answers to any of Venus' strokes. While sister Serena defeated Elena Dementieva, who has yet to win a Slam after 11 years on the circuit.
