One of the most primitive forms of football was once played in Japan in 1400 BC. It just involved kicking a ball in a field without any rules or court. The ancient Chinese also played football with a leather ball that was stuffed with hair. It is a known fact that football was played in Kyoto, Japan, in 611 AD. |
The Romans also played a game that was very similar to modern soccer. It was a very violent game though. The Roman football was played with 27 men and each game lasted 50 minutes. Only a few historians have documented the game and as yet no records have turned up with regard to the rules that were adhered to in ancient times.
All these games were instrumental in giving rise to soccer. Although the aforementioned games stayed popular only in their respective countries, soccer was one game which spread like wild fire and was played throughout Europe and Asia. Today, it is one of the most popular games in the world.
In England, soccer was banned from 1302 to 1327 under the rule of King Edward. He considered the game to be extremely noisy and dangerous and hence, decided to ban it. Of course with no rules, soccer in Edward's time was an extremely dangerous sport. Anyone who played the game was imprisoned. This continued with several dynasties of England. Rules made their way into soccer only in 1800s, by which time the game saw a resurgence in England.
Coming back to the question, it is impossible to say who invented soccer. There is evidence to show that the game was restarted in Eton College, England, in 1815; but the rules for the game were laid down by Cambridge University.
Today, soccer is one of the biggest games in the world and can easily be dubbed as the King of Sports. According to estimates, each time the FIFA World Cup is held, nearly 33 million people across the world watch the tournament. Certain soccer stars like David Beckham are considered by soccer pundits to be more popular than even Hollywood stars.
