The hoop or the basket is placed at 10 feet height and the ball has to go through the hoop to score a point. It is an adrenaline packed game and creates a lot of enthusiasm among onlookers.
Basketball was invented in 1891 and the credit of the invention goes to James Naismith, a physical education professor and instructor as the YMCA Training School, which is present day Springfield College in Springfield Massachusetts.
It was while Naismith was working in the school that the idea for a new game came to him. He invented the game because he wanted to keep his students fit and occupied during the long winter months of New England.
Basketball was meant to be an indoor sport and the first rules were laid out in 1892. The first court had no dimensions and the players mostly dribbled the ball up and down. The first basket was made from peach baskets that were nailed at an elevation. The basket did not have a hole and its bottom was in tact.
By 1893, the game became very popular and this prompted certain changes in the game. The peach baskets were done away with. Instead iron rim baskets with hammock style netting were installed. The netting was closed at the bottom. During this time, a basketball game took a long time to play because each time the ball fell into the net, it had to be removed manually. However, no more changes were executed after this for nearly a decade. Then the bottom of the net was opened up and it is still the same even today.
After basketball was played for nearly five decades in Canada and the US, the NBA decided to induct James Naismith, the father of basketball, into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
