In the 18th and 19th centuries, many sports were invented and the strange thing is that most of these sports invariably involved playing with a ball. In the modern civilization, cricket can be named the oldest sport easily. According to records, cricket actually started in 1788; and it was the British who started playing it first. |
And, it was due to the British that this sport found it way to many British colonies around the world.
Other games like the soccer, rugby and American football were invented in the 1860s. However, games like rugby and football are considered to be off shoots of soccer.
There are some games that are played even today but have ancient roots. One such game is tennis. There is evidence that shows that tennis was played in France and England in the 1600s. However, it was played indoors and the rules were a bit different.
Nonetheless, neither cricket nor soccer can be considered as the oldest sport played in history. This privilege can only be accorded to one sport and this sport is known as Ulama. It is a Mesoamerican game and was played in ancient Peru. The game was very identical to football (soccer) and it is possible that modern day soccer actually evolved from it. Interestingly, Ulama is played in certain South American countries even today.
In Mexico, an ancient Ulama court was discovered. According to archeologists, the court was built some time in 1500 BC. Through archaelogical evidence, it was found that the game also involved a ball. It was an eight point game and each team consisted of five members. They had to hit the ball using their hips and upper thigh. This is easily the oldest form of organized game to be played in human history. The ball has existed for a long time and there could be several more games older than Ulama that may have been played in other parts of the world. However, there are no records of these games.
