Physical education is considered as the main form of exercise for children in schools across America. And, there is a very good reason for this. Sports at school is invariably the only form of exercise many children indulge in. In fact, if you look at the history of exercise sport, you will find out that sports was considered as a form of exercise only from the 20th century. |
During historic times, sports was considered as recreation and a platform for men to demonstrate their strength. This concept of sports prevailed for many centuries. Men, who were warriors, used sports as a way to stay fit so that they could take on the rigors of warfare when the need arose. In fact, during peace time many ancient cultures like Greeks and Romans held sporting events for men.
However, as times changed and modernization took over, people needed to find alternative methods to stay fit. Fitness itself has a history that dates back to the evolution of man. Man has been exercising for one reason or the other. In the beginning, it was for food. As he evolved, man had to keep fit for warfare. Ancient Chinese traditions indicate that physical activity was the way of life and there had to be some regular activity in a person's life if he wanted to keep fit. Kung Fu was developed as a form of exercise in China, and so also badminton and wrestling.
Indians developed exercises like Yoga and meditation which increased spirituality in the person. For the Greeks, it was gymnastics as they were deeply involved in shaping the body. They believed in the aesthetic sense of the physical body. In Rome, they started all kinds of sports and that is what gave birth to the Olympic Games actually. It was mainly staged to show off how physically fit a person was.
Sports have always played a vital role in physical fitness and in fact, sports can be considered as a form of physical exercise itself.
