History And Women And Sports

Women started featuring in sports pretty late. Their participation started some time in the 19th century and these women were both amateurs and professionals. This could be because gender bias was slowly being eradicated and more avenues were opening for women to showcase their talent and abilities.

In fact, even before sporting events opened for women, they were active in a number of sports like figure skating, gymnastics, tennis and badminton. However, the women who participated in these sports did it for entertainment and recreation rather than money or profession.

In the human sports history, athletic competitions have always been regarded as a male dominion. In any ancient scripts across the world, athletic competitions were always held to show off masculine strength and most participants were invariably warriors and soldiers. Through these sporting events, men were portrayed as virile creatures while women were merely spectators and relegated to domestic chores. In the ancient Olympic Games held in Rome, evidence shows that women were not even present in the audience. It was totally an all men affair.

However, later evidence was found that a separate Olympic event was held for women and this event was called the Heraea Games. As mentioned earlier, women’s involvement in sports was only seen in the late 19th century and the 20th century. Countries like North America and England saw an increase in the number of women participating in sports because social opinions were slowly changing and women were being considered and treated as equal.

However, professional associations that were formed during the early stages to help sportswomen did not fare well as there was a lack of participation and support from the public. That is why many sportswomen actually started out during those times by taking part in amateur sporting events.
