Australia: World Cup SoccerIf you know anything about the Australia soccer team you are probably not expecting much from them during this year’s World Cup soccer tournament. They have only been to the World Cup once before, in 1974 and are certainly underdogs this year as well. The interesting thing about the Australia team is that they possess a mentality unique to their team alone. They have a certain way of intimidating and scaring their opponents that is un-replicated in the world of soccer. For some reason, they can easily disrupt their opponents and distract them so much they cannot focus on the game. The team itself does have talent, but they are not likely the most talented group of players out there. However, they use their skills of intimidating to throw off what talent they may not possess, which usually helps them prevail over their enemies. The biggest challenge the team will have for the World Cup soccer tournament in 2006 is the fact that some of their best players are injured and not playing at their best. Their best and most experienced defender, Tony Vidmar, will not be playing. In addition, their star players Cahill, Viduka, and Kewell are injured and not playing up to par. Lastly, their star goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is injured and not playing well either. So only time will tell if the Australia team has enough toughness and attitude to scare their opponents and pull off the wins they need to progress in the World Cup soccer tournament this year. They are underdogs that just might be able to pull something interesting and unexpected off. |
