Where Did The Japanese Martial Arts Originate ?

It is very difficult to pinpoint when or where the Japanese martial arts originated or started. The history of the origin of Japanese martial dates back to the Samurai traditions. The caste system that was followed in ancient Japan allowed the use of weapons only by members of certain warrior classes.

A Samurai, who was a warrior in ancient Japan, was expected to protect and guard his country and his people by pledging his life.

Samurais were extremely disciplined and closed community of people. The lived away from the towns and cities in the mountains and never mingled with the normal crowd. The Samurai martial art tradition also involved several self improvement techniques that have been adapted to modern day martial arts techniques.

Most of the styles of the martial arts in ancient Japan were deeply intertwined with the use of complex weaponry. These weapons were used in combat only when necessary. The weapons were further developed by different traditions in Japan. However, the martial arts that are popular today absolutely use no weapons and most of the combats are unarmed. In fact, in the modern world, very few styles of martial arts use weapons and invariably these weapons are meant for defense rather than offense.

As Japan started getting modernized, these traditions were slowly wiped out. However, the people who taught martial arts in Japan were displeased and decided to retain some of their traditions by continuing to teach martial arts. Each school of thought developed its own form of martial art and that is how different styles of martial arts originated in Japan. Most of the martial arts that we learn today, like Judo or Tae Kwon Do, are a result of these schools of thoughts. Thus, making them more modern than we think they are. Though these martial arts are deeply rooted in ancient Japanese culture, they have been adapted to modern times.
