Japanese culture is a very complex system to understand. The culture has adapted to western civilization very quickly over a period of time. So, no one exactly knows why there are two different categories in the martial arts system. But experts believe that the categories date back to the times of the Meiji restoration when the Japan was rapidly modernizing as a society and culture. During this modernization period, many Japanese traditions were lost and some people were not happy about this loss. So, they started teaching martial arts in a subtle way to students to help retain the essence of their lost culture.

Today, the most common styles of martial arts in Japan are Judo and Jiu Jitsu. These also include Tae Kwon Do. These styles are mainly adapted for more spiritual growth and are performed in a leisurely manner. These martial art styles concentrate on both mind and body development. Most of the techniques concentrate on self improvement. The form of martial arts that we learn today has been reworked from the ancient form of that particular martial art. They cannot used for fighting or warfare. However, with proper training, one can become an expert fighter should the need arise. Also, a person who learns a martial art is taught the Samurai’s philosophical beliefs, which help greatly in self improvisation.

Koryu Budo, which means old school martial arts, teaches styles like Jutsu and Jiutsu. The Gendai Budo teaches arts like Judo and Tae Kwon Do. In fact, just by the name of the martial art, you can tell which style it belongs to.
