The detailed history of the origin of martial arts can be found in the Samurai traditions in Japan. The caste system that was followed in ancient Japan restricted the usage of weapons to only certain class of people. Among the warriors, the Samurais were the ones who were proficient in weaponry and combat. Most of the martial art forms in Japan were unarmed and used minimal weapons. One of the basic principles of the art was to respect the opponent or the enemy. In the Samurai tradition, if the person lost, he would automatically sacrifice his life on his own terms. This was known as Hara Kiri. No Samurai ever lived after losing a combat. Also, in martial arts, people never attacked from behind. It was an organized and fair combat. Over time the principles of martial arts started being used for spiritual growth.
