Woods Wins Sixth PGA Tour Event in a Row (October 2006)Woods’ winning streak began 10 weeks ago in Hoylake in the British Open to end on the fairways of north London in the American Express Championship last weekend, becoming the first player in tour history to win at least eight times in three seasons. Threatened only by the weather that twice delayed the game, Woods closed with a 4-under 67 for an eight-shot victory over Adam Scott and Ian Poulter. He did not win by an eight-shot margin, his largest victory margin, since winning by eleven at the 2003 Bay Hill Invitational. Woods had a great control over his game. Statistics show that he was third in driving distance and fifth in driving accuracy, missing only 12 fairways during the week. Besides in a week remembered for the death of Byron Nelson, with the performance of Woods some people consider that Lord Byron's record in 1945 of 11 consecutive victories may not be untouchable anymore. Woods already won eight times in 1999 and nine times in 2000. This season Woods missed the win in the U.S. Open. It was his first major tournament since his father died of cancer in May. But since the U.S. event, he didn't win only two tournaments, the Western Open and the World Match Play Championship, which is a European Tour event that does not count toward his PGA Tour winning streak. Woods outstandingly defended his title for the fifth time this year, and he is now 10-of-15 in World Golf Championships that are stroke play. After playing seven times in the last nine weeks, Woods is set to take some vacation for a few weeks. |
