Golf Terminology

If you're getting into golf, whether watching or playing, it's helpful to be familiar with the terminology. Some terminology can easily be picked up, but with so many terms and phrases it can easily get a little confusing. Two of the most important terms that you'll hear often are Birdie and Eagle.

A birdie is making the hole with one under par, and an eagle would be playing a hole 2 under par. An ace is a hole in one, which is a term all of could get used to hearing a little more often. The back nine is simply used to refer to the remaining nine holes of an eighteen hole course.

There are plenty of terms used just for the direction, curve, and landing of the ball you hit. A banana ball is a slice that curves in the shape of a banana. A backspin on the ball that causes it to stop with little to no roll is referred to as a bite. Hitting the ball in a downward cutting motion causing the club to dig into the ground is referred to as a jerk.

A push is the term used to describe when the ball goes right of its target with little to no curving. The left-hander's version of this is of course called a pull. This is just a taste of the golf terminology that you will commonly hear during any game.
