2006 Preseason Analysis

San Diego: What To Expect

With Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer on their side, the San Diego Chargers can only be excited about the upcoming NFL season. Coach Marty Schottenheimer was the NFL Coach of the Year last year, which is a huge honor. He is respected by the players and everyone else associated with the NFL and the award only signifies that fact.

Although the team is led by a strong team of coaches, the Chargers might struggle a bit this season. Without the leadership from quarterback Drew Brees, the team might have a hard time staying on track. The player that will replace Drew Brees as the starting quarterback is Philip Rivers. Rivers has only been playing in the NFL for three years and only attempted 30 passes in the past two seasons. So, this could be a bad choice for the team overall. However, at this time it might also be their only choice.

The good news is that although San Diego lost their star quarterback, Brees, they still have a hope. And that hope is called LaDainian Tomlinson. Tomlinson is the running back that will likely save the team from losing much of this season. He is five year into the NFL and averages over 1,000 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns each season.

The defense also has hope in the free agency pickups of Marlon McCree and Donnie Edwards. These two players should be able to bring experience and talent to a weaker defense the Chargers are currently playing with.

All in all, it will be interesting to see how the Chargers fare without Brees this season.
