Big Ben’s Road to RecoveryBen Roethlisberger - or “Big Ben” as he is affectionately called by fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers - suffered serious injuries when his 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle collided with a car on Monday, June 12th. Cited by police officers for riding a motorcycle without a valid license and without wearing a safety helmet, Big Ben not only broke his jaw and nose, but additionally suffered several cuts in the facial area. His injuries were so severe that it took more than six hours of intense surgery to repair the fractures. Steelers’ fans are worried about the famed player; after all, the training camp is scheduled to start at the end of July, and healing time for such serious facial fractures is usually set at about eight weeks. The 24-year old star player is well known for his no-nonsense and high impact play, and many onlookers fear that he will not be able to play with as much strength or take as many risks as he was able to do before the accident. Considering that Big Ben became the youngest quarterback to lead a professional football team to the Super Bowl game, it is not surprising that much nail biting is going on amidst football insiders and fans alike. While Roethlisberger expresses ample caution in suggesting in a July 13th interview that he is not sure if he will ride a motorcycle ever again, his overall prognosis is very promising. Suffering only a very mild concussion, the surgery successfully fixed the fractures he suffered, and his focus is once again on football. |
