Kellen Winslow: Anxious to Hit the Field

by Chris Bibey
2006-08-03

Kellen Winslow, tight end for the Cleveland Browns, is looking to make an impact on the field this season. If this happens, it will be a major change for him. Since joining the Browns out of the University of Miami, he has never been much more than a statue on the sideline.

Winslow missed the entire 2005 season due to severe leg injuries that he suffered while trying to do stunts on his motorcycle. Since then, he has been working hard to get back into playing shape, but some of his injuries were so severe that this may never fully happen.

In addition to tearing ligaments in his knee, he also fractured his femur and had to deal with several surgeries. To make things worse, he suffered from a staph infection after one of the surgeries which delayed recovery even further.

During his rookie campaign in 2004, Winslow only played two games before he broke his right fibula trying to recover an onside kick.

For a guy with a mouth as big as Winslow’s, it is safe to say that he better get something done on the field this season. During his college days and early in his pro career, Winslow has been louder off the field than on it.

Even though Winslow has more than likely lost a step or two, he should still be able to help out the Browns offense in more ways than one. Not only should he be a big target for young quarterback Charlie Frye, but he should also be able to help out with blocking duties when the Browns decide to run the ball.

Everybody is waiting to see what Winslow can do in 2006. But I do not think that anybody is more excited than Kellen Winslow himself.
