Jamal Lewis, Ready to Return

by Chris Bibey
2006-08-02

In 2003 Jamal Lewis took the NFL by storm when he rushed for 2,066 yards. Before this, only four players in the history of the league had rushed for more than 2,000 yards in a single season. In addition, he also chipped in 14 touchdowns.

But in 2005, Lewis was no where near that standard of play. He was coming off of an ankle injury as well as some time in jail for a legal run in. The drop off in just two seasons was astonishing, and the Ravens suffered accordingly. During the 2005 season he only rushed for 906 yards, and three touchdowns. These were career lows for Lewis.

With training camp underway, Lewis is out to prove to himself and the league that he can regain the form that he showed in 2003. It appears that his ankle is back to where it should be, and his legal problems are behind him for the time being.

In addition, Lewis signed a $26 million contract in the off season. This should go a long way in helping him keep his mind on football. After all, this shows that the Ravens are committed to him being their number one back, at least for the next few years.

Since it appears that the Ravens are still going to lack a top notch passing game, it is going to be up to Lewis to keep the offense in some games. In the very competitive AFC North, the Ravens have a lot of ground to make up if they want to catch the Steelers and Bengals.

Overall, Lewis is ready to take the league by storm once again. If he can rush for more than 2,000 yards again is anybody’s guess! But it is safe to say that if anybody can do it, he can.
