When Did Football Start ?

Football began in the 1800s. Actually this is the time when it really started gaining popularity as a game. Football was actually a combination of both soccer and rugby. In 1874, the first game that sort of resembled the current day football was played.

The first game to be played was between Harvard and the McGill College. At that time, students played football as a combination of soccer and rugby. Even here there was a split in thoughts. Harvard wanted to play soccer, and McGill wanted to play rugby. The rules did not match and there was obviously a lot of confusion. So, they decided to play both the games.

After both the games were played, Harvard agreed that rugby was a better game. In fact, they liked the game very much and spread it to other eastern colleges. This was how college football started.

The first National Football League (NFL) game was played between Latrobe, PA and a team from Jeannette, PA on August 31, 1895. Jeannette lost with a score of 12-0. It was only in the1950s that the NFL started growing as a game.

In the early days of football, the players did not know how to protect themselves like they do today. They did have several things for protection like shoulder pads and leg pads, but they were very small. In addition, there were no helmets and this meant that a lot of players were injured, some grievously, during the course of a match.

As time went by people realized that the game could cause a lot of injuries and then steps were taken to introduce proper protective gear. The players began to wear helmets and slowly this developed into face masks. Large shoulder pads were introduced and so also, proper pads for the legs were designed.
