Free Agent Wells Signed a Two-Year Deal With Rockets

Bonzi Wells, who was the last significant free-agent talent on the market, agreed to sign a two-year deal, worth $5 million, with the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. For the second year in a row Wells held a player option and totally plans to re-enter the free agent market next summer. For the player it is not only about the money but it is also being at the right place where he can contribute.

Wells changed agent a few weeks ago, hiring Scott, after Bill Phillips turned down a five-year deal, worth $36 million, from the Sacramento Kings. Attempts to work a sign-and-trade that might've allowed Wells to match or improve the Kings' offer failed. Because Sacramento refused to take back any salaries after the team signed John Salmons with the money refused by Wells.

Wells left both Portland and Memphis, his two previous teams, after being often portrayed as a malcontent. However his 13.6 points and 7.7 rebounds in 52 games with the Kings last season and a strong first-round playoff performance against San Antonio restored some of his reputation. Wells and Ron Artest were an outstanding forward combination. Artest also lobbied in his name for the Kings to re-sign Wells. Wells originally wanted Phillips to win him a $50 million deal. But Phillips failed.

Other teams like Denver, Boston, Charlotte and Miami also made offers. But the Rockets did the best offer to convince Wells he could contribute to the team. The Rockets will go into training camp next week with a potential starting lineup of Rafer Alston, McGrady, Shane Battier, Juwan Howard and Yao, and with Wells as the sixth man.
