Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals are currently in last place in the National League East division and are trailing the first place New York Mets by 17 games. The best thing for the Nationals to do at this point is to start building for the future. They have the core players that are needed in order to be a play off contending team, but they are still a long way away from making this happen.

The situation for the Nationals is just like it is for a lot of teams who are cellar dwellers. There pitching staff has struggled with consistency during the first half of the season, and if they are going to improve they need to start throwing more strikes. Their erratic appearances have given away too many close games, and turned good run production into a loss. At the plate the Nationals are not as bad, but Alfonso Soriano is in desperate need of some help in the middle of the order.

For the Nationals the trade deadline may be something that they are looking at with a close eye. They may be looking to get a couple of players to build on for next season, but at the same time they may be looking to clear up some space as well. This is the same for a lot of teams, but for the Nationals it is particularly important because it is clear that they want to make a run at the title within the next couple of years.
