Houston Astros

The Houston Astros have gotten themselves into a bad spot in the National League Central division. Even though they are within striking distance of the division leading St. Louis Cardinals, they have a lot of work to do and a few other contenders to deal with. At this point the Astros are seven and a half games out of first, and sit behind the Brewers and the Reds. This will make for a very interesting last two months of the season in this division.

If the Astros have any hope of making a run at the play offs they are going to need to start hitting the ball with more consistency. Lance Berkman has been pounding the ball all season, but outside of him there has been little to no help. It is very possible the Astros will be looking to make a move for a big bat before the trade deadline.

The pitching staff has been having a rough time as well, but with Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens they should never be counted out. In addition to these two, the Astros also have several young pitchers that have been coming into their own. The bullpen has been a major disappointment in 2006.

At this point the Astros have a chance to pass up the teams in front of them and contend with the Cardinals for the division. If this is to happen they will need to become more consistent on the mound and get some help for Berkman at the plate.
