Detroit TigersThe Detroit Tigers have surprised a lot of people this season. Sure, before the season started they looked halfway decent on paper, but I do not think that anybody expected the Tigers to be as good as they are. Starting off the second half of the season, the Tigers have the best record in all of baseball. In addition, they are leading the American League Central division by four and a half games over the defending world champion Chicago White Sox. The Tigers should thank their lucky stars that Manager Jim Leyland showed up in town. He was being pursued by several clubs but decided to head to Detroit to try and turn the Tigers around; he has done just that plus more. Leyland has had a lot of help by a powerful batting order that has been anchored somewhat by Marcus Thames. In addition, the pitching staff has done a great job and is not showing any sign of slowing down as the season wears on. Keep an eye on the Tigers as the trade deadline approaches. They may be looking to add another bat to the lineup so that they can contend with some of the heavier hitters as the play offs close in. Overall, the Tigers have impressed everybody in the league up to this point in the season. As long as they continue to pitch as they have and their bats do not disappear, it appears that the Tigers will win their division and head into the play offs with the best record in the league. |
