Everyone enjoys clinging to that “useless information” that we run across in our everyday life. This is especially true of sports fans, who are likely to spout random statistics in any conversation regarding their favorite team. If you are one of these fanatics, here’s a little fuel for your fire, in the form of various basketball trivia.

  1. The modern basketball measures 9-1/2 inches (24 cm) in diameter and weighs between 20 and 22 ounces. The metal orange hoops measure 18 inches in diameter.
  2. Basketball became an official Olympic event in the summer games of 1936, which took place in Berlin, Germany.
  3. The record for most points scored in a career belongs to basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who played 20 seasons in the NBA and racked up 38,387 points.
  4. Lenny Wilkens, who currently coaches for the Atlanta Hawks, has won more games than any other coach.
  5. The three-point shot was not always a part of the NBA – it was originally part fo the ABA (American Basketball Association) and was incorporated into the NBA only before the 1979-80 season.
  6. The Chicago Bulls have only been to six NBA Finals Championships – but they have won all of the Finals in which they appeared.
  7. The Boston Celtics have won more NBA Championships than any other team, with a total of 16 titles to their credit.
  8. By the time Shaquille O’Neal was thirteen years old, he was already 6’6”. He currently wears an amazing size 22 shoe.
  9. The first intercollegiate basketball game was played in 1895 between Minnesota State School of Agriculture and Hamline College, with Minnesota winning by a score of 9-3.
  10. The first televised college basketball games were in 1940, one of which was a match between New York University and Georgetown at Madison Square Garden (NYU won 50-27).
  11. The original game of basketball was played based on a set of only thirteen rules. One of those stated that the game would consist of two 15-minute halves, with a five minute rest in between. Another stated that no shouldering, holding, pushing, striking or tripping an opponent was allowed (it was also considered a foul to strike the ball with a fist).
